Heads up if you’re heading north this summer or fall!
Indigenous Tourism Canada invites you to experience the northern lights like never before.
#Canada #Travel #NorthernLights #DestinationIndigenous #SkyCandyHow to see the Aurora Borealis with an Indigenous Eye 🪶:
The Dene people call it Yua’ke ngas, or sky stirring, and the spectacular rippling light show is known as aurora borealis or Northern Lights. Many legends and beliefs surround the phenomena: some Indigenous Peoples believe they are spirits of ancestors, that whistling will make them dance, or that it’s a sign from the Great Spirit. In the Northwest Territories, the jeweled hues of green, purple, yellow and pink can be seen an average of 240 nights per year due to the perfect combination of clear nights, flat landscape, low humidity and the location beneath the earth’s auroral oval. Scientifically explained, it occurs when charged particles travel 150 million kilometers from the sun and collide with atoms in the earth’s magnetic field. The colors are generated when specific elements are activated by the sun. Vibrant reds are from nitrogen atoms, while greens and yellows rise from interacting with oxygen.
The ideal time for viewing is mid-August through the end of September and from mid-November until mid-April. It’s the major draw for tourists to the area who have a 98 percent chance of witnessing the spectacle over three nights. An entire tourist eco-system has developed around the Northern Lights and in order to protect the environment a policy has been implemented by the City of Yellowknife to limit light pollution. Viewing them with an Indigenous operator like North Star Adventures , B. Dene Adventures, Bucketlist Tours or Aurora Village offers a firsthand cultural experience that includes stories of their traditional way of life, the spiritual connection and responsibility they share with the land, and also contributes to valuable economic and employment opportunities for the Indigenous community.

When artist Pat Barker saw this cabin at BC’s Nipika Mountain Resort she had to take a photo and recreate the 🇨🇦 scene as a painting.
“I hope my work makes people happy and inspires them to pick up a paintbrush and paint,” she tells us. “Art can be learned, like any other subject. I believe there’s an artist in everyone.”
Barker’s work is on display at Nipika Mountain Resort until the snow melts.
As an aside, she also sells xcountry ski socks (which we may have purchased) featuring this cozy mountain scene.

#DYK that #Artemis II will make Canada the second country ever to have an astronaut fly around the Moon? This is a huge milestone for us, the space industry and Canadian history. We can hardly contain our excitement! 🌙

Imagine we set out to tackle climate like an elite athlete: Long-term stretch goal, hitting short-term targets. Working hard every day to make progress. Innovating. Digging deep. Never giving up.
Imagine the finish line is healthy planet for all. That's what winning looks like.
The retreat of the lake ice is underway,
Melting, crumbling, cracking,
Against the onslaught of the creek,
Marching under the banner of spring
