Sometimes the least exotic destinations cough up the best travel experiences. Where’s the least cushy place you’ve traveled to and what great things did you get out of that experience?
We stayed in Rocamadour in Hotel Restaurant Terminus des Pelerins. It was a two-star with a balcony (unusual). We find that anything less than a 3-star in France is very small and very much like a budget hotel. However, we stayed two nights. Because of this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocamadour . We were just above the treeline right in the middle of the town. It was spectacular.

Can I just say that this piece by one of Canada’s premier travel writers, Bruce Kirkby, speaks really well to the question. If readers haven’t seen it, they might enjoy!
