When 🇨🇦 artist Pat Barker saw this cozy cabin at @nipikamtnresort - located near Radium, BC - she had to take a photo and recreate the scene as a painting.

“It was such a Canadian image - with snow and sports equipment everywhere. It’s rare at Nipika not to see bikes, skis, toboggans and dogs in front of the cabins,” Barker tells us.

“I suppose if anything, I hope my paintings make people happy. I also hope they inspire people to pick up a paintbrush and paint, or take a course. Art can be learned, just like any subject in school. I really believe there’s an artist in all of us.”

Thanks @patbarker1177 for letting us share.

Fyi, we saw her work during our last Nipika adventure and we may have even purchased a pair of black ski socks that the artist sells (which feature this fantastic cabin scene. 😍)

For those interested, Barker’s work is currently showing at @nipikamtnresort until the snow melts.

We’ve been lucky to experience Nightrise at the @banffgondola three times and with each visit, our takeaway has been different.

The first time was when the unique interactive digital exhibit - a collaboration between the Stoney Nakoda, @momentfactory and @pursuitbanffjasper - first launched in 2021.

We’ll never forget dancing with our friends late that snowy night, outside on a mountain top with the lights of Banff sparkling below.

Our soundtrack to the evening was a soulful compilation created by music director Anders Hunter of the Stoney Nakoda.

Hunter would later tell us in an interview that “Nightrise is a step toward living in harmony, all of us, together.”

Our second visit happened in 2022 when, along with a handful of other travel writers, we were invited to return with @destinationindigenous

This time around, we paid even closer attention to the recordings being shared, in Stoney but with English translations and featuring ancient, winter-inspired reflections from people who have lived in these mountains since time immemorial.

A woman from the Stony Nakoda community told us that this collab is a point of pride for her people, and that the Elders especially find it moving to hear their language being shared outside of their immediate community in such a beautiful way.

Nightrise, she said, is a stellar example of “reconcili-action” in Canada.

This winter, we returned once again and we visited the summit hut addition to Nightrise (featured in this photo) - where we were able to listen to a local legend about the Big Dipper. It was fun to kick back under a cozy blanket and let our imaginations soar.

Nightrise is nothing if not playful, but it’s also profound. In other words, we weren’t surprised at all to hear that the effort recently won an Indigenous/Non-Indigenous Partnership CITE award from @indigenous.tourism.alberta

Congrats to all who were involved in this heartfelt collaboration, open to the public until March 31, 2023.

Cheers for spending time with us, Laval. You’re a storyteller like no other.

As the sun sets on 2022, we’re posting this painting by Rossland, BC-based @stephaniegauvinartist - who reminds us that the snowy season is way more than just white.

“As a painter, there are so many cool colours to play with, depending on the light,” says Quebec-born Gauvin, who counts the creatives behind Canadian Pacific Railway’s famous vintage posters among her influences.

Given the last few years, we’re feeling especially grateful for T&C’s community - from our wonderful contributors to followers like you to partners in travel who keep us paddling forward.

Your support means everything as we continue to cover travel culture in Canada and sometimes even beyond (but always with a 🇨🇦 spin, of course.)

May your 2023 be filled with peace, wonder and colourful outdoor adventures to write home about.

Last night, we attended the 93rd annual @rcgs_sgrc Fellows dinner in Ottawa.

It was an exceptional event celebrating extraordinary Canadians, people like the Canadian Space Agency’s @astro_kutryk and new Fellow @nat.gillis of @natgillisphotography and @jeanchretienofficial - who was interviewed on stage, memorably (“Vive Le Canada!”), by @evanljsolomon

We loved hearing a live performance by singer/songwriter @beatricedeerband and catching up with @thecarolpatterson @brandy_y_productions and @guy_theriault as well as other Fellows in attendance, including @mariorigby @christophercran @canadian.landscapes @lynncangeo @dapps and Canadian Chapter Chair of @the_explorers_club @jett_britnell

We especially loved rallying with passionate travel ambassadors like @mapleleafadvent @adventure.canada @oceanquestnl @greatcanadiantrails and @eagleeyetours in person.

Small Canadian travel businesses like yours are the reason why we love doing what we do at Toque & Canoe.

Cheers to everyone at @cangeotravel @cangeoedu @cangeo and the @rcgs_sgrc - including @geiger.john - for a fabulous night and for, of course, making Canada better known to Canadians and the world.

More people need to know about what you’re up to and how they can participate.

This, we know for certain. ❤️🇨🇦❤️

This past summer, we were finally able to check out the storied @naramatainn for ourselves. We may have only stayed for lunch (the hamburger was excellent!) but we sure got to see what the fuss is about.

Beautiful location in BC’s wine country. A gorgeous room on offer if you want to dine out and enjoy a night away. Food to write home about. Oh, and the friendliest staff we’ve come across in the Okanagan region.

We’ll definitely return to enjoy more cuisine by the legendary @nedbell - featured in this slide show with photos courtesy @naramatainn #hosted #naramata #okanagan #britishcolumbia #canada #travel

“If the ocean and the rocks could put their heads together to design a cathedral built from wood, this inn would be it.

“If the future and the past collided - bam! - and here and now took shape before your eyes, this is what it would look like.”

Given that Canada’s extraordinary Fogo Island Inn turns ten this week, we thought we should re-post this gorgeous little story from our travelling poet Lorna Crozier.

Happy Birthday Fogo Island Inn!
