When Canadian photographer Adam Hill posted this photo of a Great Grey Owl with the cutline “Something touched my foot” we laughed out loud.

You, too, might recognize that look, the one people get when they’re swimming in a lake or the ocean and something unexpected brushes up against them in the water.

“That’s what it seemed like this owl was experiencing,” Hill tells us. “The ironic part is that the owl had just completed a successful hunt and its foot was actually locked on a vole.”

Photographing owls, he continues, is a treat given that he’s only ever seen them a dozen times.

“They’re able to hear the smallest sounds coming from beneath the snow. They fly silently. They possess needle-like talons. They swivel their heads, and see incredibly well in the dark. When you’re with an owl, you know you’re in for something special.”

I had a similar experience while fishing at Snafu Lake in the Yukon Territory. I was casting from an old beaver lodge for arctic grayling when I felt something on my foot and looked down to see a mink standing on my sandal and looking up at me as if to say, “Caught anything yet?” – Brian Smart, Whitehorse, Yukon Territory.
