“We love the winter – in fact, when given the option of heading South this past Christmas my kids said, ‘What? Why would we waist a perfectly good cold winter going somewhere hot?’ Our family loves hockey, skating on our backyard rink, cross-country skiing, shinny on the community ice rink, beautiful blue sky/white snow Alberta days, chinooks when you can build snowmen in your tshirt, playing board games when it is too cold outside, hot chocolate, crock-pot spaghetti and meatballs, hearty soups and homemade bread. All of these things make up our winter. It also makes me love spring all the more when it gets here.”

It sounds crazy, but I actually love the versatility of the season! There’s so much to do outdoors—I’m partial to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. There is something for all ages: from snowman-making and snow angels to alpine skiing in the mountains (if you’re lucky to live close to them like I am!). And if you’re not feeling up to braving the cold, no one will fault you for it! Curling up next to the fire with a book, mug of tea or your sweetheart are totally legitimate ways to enjoy our Canadian winters! Thanks for the opportunity to win!

Having spent a couple winters in the relatively temperate (compared to the rest of our beloved country) climate of the Niagara Peninsula I have been missing out on tobogganing with my family and skating on our pond. However, I’ve gained an affinity for the Icewine celebrations here – dawn harvest to liquid gold. Tasting Niagara Icewine is so much more delectable when you get to know the process!

Why skiing along the Powder Highway in Beautiful British Columbia of course! Where deep snow, funky towns and some of the most down-home adventure packed ski resorts on the continent exist. At every turn more resorts, back-country helicopter,snow-cat and touring operations than any other region in the world! Load up the skis, check the snow reports and head off for an epic powder day in the mountains.

I live in the Northwest Territories, where the expression “the boys of winter” takes on a whole new meaning. Crews spend three months each year building and maintaining winter roads that connect isolated communities to one another. I have a soft spot for the one that runs north from Fort McMurray to Fort Chipewyan and Fort Smith because it’s where I fell in love with my spouse. For me, winter is about families and friends in different communities being able to connect with one another.
